Retail POS: Connecting Inventory, Checkout and Payments

Published by BSV Solution Editorial Team•BSV Solution

In retail, the register is really an inventory system that happens to take payments. If counts drift, everything downstream drifts with them: reordering, margin reporting and shrink visibility.

Get the catalog right first

Clean SKUs, consistent naming and correct units are what make scanning fast and reporting trustworthy. Variants such as size and color should be structured, not typed into the item name.

Barcodes and labels

Confirm scanner compatibility and whether you can print shelf and product labels from the same system.

Variants and bundles

Structured variants keep reporting clean; bundles need rules for how stock decrements.

Purchase orders

Receiving against a PO is what keeps counts accurate over time.

Checkout speed matters more than features

Counter hardware should let a cashier scan, take payment and hand back a receipt without waiting on a screen. Test that flow with your own products before committing.

Contactless, chip and mobile wallet acceptance should all be present at the counter, along with a customer-facing display where tips or disclosures apply.

Planning for a second location

Multi-location retail needs shared catalogs, per-store stock and consolidated reporting. Confirm those exist before you need them, because retrofitting is harder than starting correctly.

Configuration is reviewed individually, and processor selection remains subject to underwriting approval.
