Restaurant POS Checklist: What to Confirm Before You Buy

Published by BSV Solution Editorial Team•BSV Solution

Restaurant point of sale fails in the details. Coursing, modifiers, tip handling and kitchen routing decide whether a busy Friday runs smoothly, and none of them show up in a spec sheet.

Front of house

Start with the order flow your servers actually use. Table maps, tabs, seat numbers, coursing and split checks should take fewer taps than your current system, not more.

Split and merge checks

Confirm splitting by seat, item and amount, plus merging tables mid-service.

Modifiers and forced choices

Nested modifiers and required selections prevent kitchen mistakes at the source.

Tip handling

Check tip prompts, tip adjustment after authorization and how tips flow into payroll reporting.

Kitchen and expediting

Decide whether tickets print or display, and map every item category to the right station. Misrouted tickets are the most common source of service friction after a POS change.

If you run online ordering or delivery platforms, confirm those tickets arrive in the same queue as dine-in orders so nothing is worked from a tablet on the shelf.

Back office

Labor, voids, comps, product mix and daily close reports are what let you manage cost after the shift. Confirm you can export them in the format your bookkeeper expects.

Hardware and software configuration is reviewed individually because a counter-service café and a full-service dining room need different builds. Availability may vary by model.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a full station or will a handheld work?

It depends on service style. Counter service often runs on one compact station, while full service benefits from a fixed station plus handhelds for tableside ordering and payment.

Can online orders come into the same system?

In many setups yes, through supported integrations. Which platforms connect depends on the system and the processor configuration, so it is confirmed during setup.

How are tips reported?

Tip totals appear in your daily and payroll-oriented reports. Exact handling depends on your configuration and local requirements, which a specialist can review with you.
