How this works in practice
At the counter
A gift card is sold or reloaded like any other line item β the register accepts cash, card, or the balance itself for redemption, and the receipt shows the remaining balance so the customer doesn't have to ask.
Hardware compatibility
Physical gift cards read the same way a debit or loyalty card does, via the magstripe or barcode reader built into Clover Mini, Clover Station, and most countertop devices; digital gift cards redeem by code entered manually or via a customer-facing QR scan on supported models.
Connectivity and offline behavior
Balance checks and redemptions require connectivity to confirm the current balance against the account, the same as any card-based payment; a card sold offline in a brief outage will sync its activation once the connection returns.
Staffing and training
Staff need to know how to sell, reload, and redeem a card, and how to check a balance without processing a sale β usually a two-minute walkthrough during onboarding.
Migrating your existing setup
Gift card liability from a previous processor or POS generally does not transfer automatically; if your outstanding balances need to carry over, we discuss a migration path (such as manual balance credit) during setup rather than assuming compatibility.
Who this fits
Retail, restaurants, and salons where gift-giving or prepaid balances are a normal part of business β particularly around holiday seasons when a branded card doubles as marketing.
