How this works in practice
At the counter
Employees clock in with a PIN or, on supported Clover and PAX devices, a fingerprint reader, and the register locks sensitive functions like refunds or price overrides until a manager PIN unlocks them. Shift totals, tip pools, and cash drawer counts are tied to whoever is clocked in, so a shift-change discrepancy can be traced to the register session that produced it instead of guessed at.
Hardware compatibility
Time tracking and role permissions run on the same countertop or handheld device used for sales β Clover Station Duo/Solo, Clover Mini, and Clover Flex all support PIN and biometric clock-in. There is no separate time clock terminal to buy unless you want one at a back-of-house entrance.
Connectivity and offline behavior
Clock-in events and schedules sync over the same Wi-Fi or ethernet connection as sales. If the internet drops, the device queues clock-in/out events locally on supported models and pushes them once the connection returns, so a brief outage does not lock staff out of the register.
Staffing and training
Most staff only need to learn the PIN pad and their own permission tier; managers need a short walkthrough of the scheduling and reporting dashboard. Expect a single onboarding session with each shift lead to cover overrides, void approvals, and how commission gets attributed to the right employee.
Migrating your existing setup
If you're moving off spreadsheets or a standalone time clock, we import your employee roster and role structure during setup so nobody re-enters names on day one; existing pay rates and schedules in a third-party scheduling tool are generally re-entered rather than auto-imported.
Who this fits
Businesses with hourly shift workers and more than one person handling the register β restaurants, retail counters, and salons where tracking who processed a sale or a refund matters for accountability and payroll.
