How this works in practice

At the counter

A customer browses a menu or catalog directly on the kiosk screen, builds their order, and pays with tap, chip, or a mobile wallet without a cashier — the kiosk prints a ticket or order number and, where connected, routes the order to a kitchen display or fulfillment queue the same as a staffed register would.

Hardware compatibility

Self-service kiosks like the PAX Q30 or Clover Kiosk are purpose-built with larger touchscreens and often integrate a receipt printer and card reader in one unit; they connect to the same back-end menu and inventory system as your staffed registers so pricing and stock stay consistent.

Connectivity and offline behavior

Kiosks require an active connection to process card payments and sync orders to the kitchen or back office, typically over ethernet or Wi-Fi for a stationary unit; an outage pauses new orders until connectivity is restored since there is no offline payment mode.

Staffing and training

Staff need to know how to restart or clear an order on the kiosk if a customer abandons a transaction, and how to handle exception cases (an item that's sold out mid-order); most day-to-day operation requires no staff involvement at all, which is the point of the device.

Migrating your existing setup

If you're adding a kiosk alongside an existing register, the kiosk's menu and pricing are configured to match your current POS catalog during setup rather than maintained as a separate system, so a price change only needs to happen once.

Who this fits

Quick-service restaurants, high-volume counters, and businesses like parking or ticketing where reducing wait times and unattended availability outweigh the value of a staffed interaction.
