How this works in practice

At the counter

A handheld device like Clover Flex or PAX A920 brings the payment to the customer — at a table, in a food truck window, or at a market booth — instead of requiring a fixed register. The device authorizes over cellular or Wi-Fi and prints a receipt from its built-in printer on the spot.

Hardware compatibility

Mobile acceptance runs on purpose-built handhelds (Clover Flex, PAX A920) with built-in printer and battery, or on phone/tablet-based readers like Clover Go for the lightest setups. The right choice depends on transaction volume and whether you need a built-in printer versus emailing receipts.

Connectivity and offline behavior

Cellular-equipped handhelds keep working outside Wi-Fi range — food trucks, markets, and delivery — while Wi-Fi-only devices depend on a nearby network. Transactions attempted with no signal at all cannot authorize until connectivity returns; there is no fully offline payment mode for card transactions.

Staffing and training

Staff need to learn battery management (charging between shifts), how to hand the device to a customer for tap/dip, and basic troubleshooting like restarting the device if it loses signal — typically a short session before first use.

Migrating your existing setup

If you're replacing another mobile reader, we test the new device alongside the old one before decommissioning it, and any saved settings (tax rates, tip presets) are reconfigured rather than imported, since these settings are usually processor-specific.

Who this fits

Food trucks, delivery drivers, market vendors, field service technicians, and any table-service restaurant wanting to close out a check without walking to a fixed terminal.
