Interchange-Plus vs Tiered vs Flat-Rate Pricing

Processors package the same underlying costs in different ways. The package you are on determines how much of your bill you can actually see.

Interchange-plus

Interchange-plus shows the network cost and the provider markup as separate figures. When interchange changes, your cost changes with it, in either direction.

It is the most transparent structure and the easiest to audit month over month, because the negotiable portion is stated explicitly rather than blended away.

Tiered pricing

Tiered pricing sorts transactions into buckets, commonly labeled qualified, mid-qualified and non-qualified. The provider decides which transactions land in which bucket.

The headline number usually refers to the cheapest bucket. If a large share of your volume is rewards cards, keyed entry or commercial cards, much of it may never qualify for that headline number.

Flat-rate pricing

Flat-rate charges one blended percentage regardless of card type. It is simple and predictable, which suits low volume, seasonal businesses and very small average tickets.

As volume grows, the simplicity has a cost: the blend has to cover the provider's most expensive transactions, so profitable card mixes subsidize the rest.

Choosing a structure for your profile

There is no universally best model. The right structure depends on monthly volume, average ticket, card mix and how much of your volume is card-present.

Steady, higher volume

Transparent structures tend to be easier to audit and to hold providers accountable to over time.

Low or seasonal volume

Predictability can be worth more than the last basis point of savings.

High keyed or online mix

Entry method drives interchange, so structure matters less than fixing how transactions are submitted.

Frequently asked questions

Which pricing model is cheapest?

It depends on your volume, ticket size and card mix. The only way to compare fairly is effective rate across a full month of your own statements.

Can I change pricing models with my current provider?

Sometimes. Providers may restructure an existing account, though terms are reviewed case by case and remain subject to approval.

Does BSV publish its rates?

No. Pricing is reviewed individually against your business profile and statement rather than published as a fixed number.

What information is needed to compare?

Two or three recent processing statements showing volume, transaction counts and all fee line items.
