Clover Station Duo POS system accepting an EBT card by chip, swipe or tap at the counter

Clover Station Duo β€” customer-facing PIN entry for benefit tenders, plus credit, debit and contactless on the same checkout.

Three ways to run an EBT transaction

Your cashiers use one workflow no matter how the shopper presents the card. No second device, no separate lane.

Insert the chip

EMV chip cards, including chip-enabled benefit cards, are inserted and read at the terminal with PIN entry β€” handled the way the card networks and benefit programs expect.

Swipe the stripe

Magnetic-stripe EBT cards are read with a standard swipe and PIN entry, the familiar flow your cashiers and shoppers already know.

Tap to pay

Contactless cards and mobile wallets tap at the reader for faster lines, where the card, wallet or benefit program supports contactless.

The EBT-ready device line-up

Countertop, handheld and mobile options. Device selection depends on your store type, ticket size and how you check shoppers out. Availability may vary by model.

EBT Food (SNAP) vs. EBT Cash β€” what the difference means at your counter

One card can carry two separate balances. Enabling both means fewer abandoned baskets and fewer conversations about what a shopper can and cannot buy.

What SNAP benefits cover β€” and what they do not

Your catalog carries the eligibility flag, so the register enforces this for you instead of relying on cashier memory. Categories follow USDA rules and can be updated by the program.

Typically eligible

  • Fruits and vegetables, fresh, frozen or canned
  • Meat, poultry, fish and dairy
  • Bread, cereals, rice, pasta and pantry staples
  • Snack foods and non-alcoholic beverages
  • Seeds and plants that produce food for the household

Not eligible on the food balance

  • Beer, wine, liquor and tobacco or vape products
  • Hot prepared foods and food sold to be eaten in the store
  • Vitamins, supplements and medicines
  • Pet food, cleaning supplies, paper goods and cosmetics
  • Fuel, lottery tickets and other non-food merchandise

Non-eligible items can still be paid with EBT Cash, debit, credit or cash in the same transaction.

What a split-tender EBT sale looks like at the register

A mixed basket is the normal case, not the exception. Here is the flow your staff learns during training.

1. Ring the whole basket

Items scan normally. Your catalog carries the SNAP-eligible flag, so the register already knows which lines qualify.

2. Choose the benefit tender

The cashier selects EBT Food or EBT Cash. The shopper inserts, swipes or taps and enters a PIN on the customer-facing screen or terminal keypad.

3. Split the remainder

The eligible subtotal draws from the benefit balance. Anything left moves to EBT Cash, debit, credit or cash in the same transaction.

4. Close and reconcile

The receipt prints the remaining benefit balance, and end-of-day reporting separates benefit tenders from your card batches.

Getting FNS authorized before you accept SNAP

USDA Food and Nutrition Service is the only entity that can authorize a store for SNAP, and applying through FNS is free. We review your product mix against the staple-food criteria first so you apply with a clear picture, and we handle the payment side once authorization is confirmed.

  • Business ownership and identification documents for each owner listed on the store
  • Store address, business licenses and any state sales-tax registration
  • A product mix that meets USDA staple-food criteria across the required categories
  • Bank account details for benefit settlement
  • Photos or an inventory summary of your shelves if FNS requests them

Authorization decisions rest entirely with FNS. Eligibility is based on your store type and inventory, and availability may vary by state.

Already authorized, or already running a POS?

Most stores that come to us are somewhere in the middle: authorized but only taking EBT on an old standalone terminal, or running a modern POS with the benefit tenders never enabled. Both are configuration work, not a rebuild.

  • Add EBT Food and EBT Cash tenders to your existing Clover setup
  • Retire a separate EBT-only terminal so one device handles every tender
  • Flag SNAP-eligible items across a large or imported catalog
  • Train cashiers on split tender, PIN entry and balance receipts
